Scientists examine the gray matter of the brain as they investigate Alzheimer's disease. A fresh study found that white matter degenerating in the brain could be an early indicator of illness. A study in Radiology was published that concludes that white matter plays an important role in the progression of the disease. Anomalous protein deposits forming amyloid plaques and tau tangles throughout the brain in Alzheimer's disease. It can also be characterized by brain tissue shrinkage due to loss of neurons.
